JD Golds,
Our summer swimming season is coming to an end.  We have had fantastic races these past few weeks and everyone’s hard work has shone through all our training.  Your technique has improved and you have all picked up new strokes.  You all put so much enthusiasm into our practices and I hope you feel encouraged to continue swimming.
Thursday is our Club Pasta Night so be sure to stick around after practice for spaghetti and a small gift I have prepared for each of you.
This season has been so much fun to coach!  I am so proud of you all and hope I will see you next season!

Coach Leo’s Final Blog of the Season

July 28th, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Coach Leo’s Final Blog of the Season)

Regional Championships is here! At this point, think back to all that we’ve practiced this season since May until now. Reflect on what I’ve told you before and after your races. Visualize how your best race would look like. Put all your energy into your races and apply everything you’ve worked on this season. Rest well and stay hydrated.

The last Word of the Week is Intensity. Ensure high intensity at all times.  As you race this weekend, think about all the keywords since May:

  • Consistency
  • Efficiency
  • Power
  • Confidence
  • Intensity

Our focus this week will be on dives, turns, and individual work on our strokes. See you this week!

Final Announcement:
I will not be attending the Kigoos Year-End Picnic on August 6 as I have to attend a wedding outside Canada. I have prepared a small gift for everyone so please come to Club Pasta Night this Thursday (July 31, PM) to receive it. It is my pleasure to be your coach this season. Swimming is extremely fun and I hope that I’ve helped deepen your interest in this sport! As you continue to improve in your strokes, I hope that you will always swim with confidence and with joy as I do every time I enter the water for races or for leisure. Thank you for being such a great group and I hope you’ve enjoyed this swim season!  – Coach Leo

Junior B Scoops Party – Friday!

July 24th, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior B Scoops Party – Friday!)

Tomorrow (the 25th) is the day that you can get your scoops from our Hell Week!

After practice ends at 7pm, we will be having our much awaited scoop cash in time, which means you get to make your own ice cream sundae! I will be providing the bowls and spoons, but feel free to bring your own bowl and spoon if you wish. There will be vanilla and chocolate ice cream, some chocolate and caramel sauce, as well as some sprinkles and candies for toppings. I will be letting you know tomorrow how many scoops you have, and I can assure you that everyone will have more than enough. If you are unable to make that practice let me know, as I will still give you a tasty reward of some sort on a later day.

I’m looking forward to our practice and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Red and White Meet

July 22nd, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Notifier - (Comments Off on Red and White Meet)

The Red and White Meet will take place this Wednesday instead of regular practices. Swimmers should arrive at the pool at 4:45 pm for a quick debrief and to sign up for the fun swimming events such as a crazy crawl relay! The meet will end no later than 8:15 pm.

Every year at the Red and White Meet the club is split into 2 teams. Each team has a theme and must compete with the other in a series of fun activities in and out of the pool.

The theme for this year’s Red and White Meet is Sorcery (Red) vs. Safari (White). Please come dressed in your most amazing wizard or explorer costume, and don’t forget to show your team colours!

Swimmers highlighted in red are on the Red Sorcery Team and those not highlighted are on the White Safari Team.  If you do not see your name, check other groups and / or check with Coach Ava.  This event is open to all Kigoos from JD up.  If Tater Tots would like to attend they must have a parent/adult supervisor.

Parents and siblings are encouraged to stick around and watch the festivities seeing as this is the most spirited Kigoo event of the season!

Ahoy there, JD Golds!
You’re about to begin your journey to Neverland!  Everyone’s swimming has been outstanding over the past two weeks and your times from the Kigoos and Crescent Beach JD meets are the best they have ever been this season.
You have all been training hard and improving on our strokes, dives, and kicks, and this is the week where it will all be put to the test in the greatest challenge you have ever faced.
If you are speedy and courageous enough to brave A Week in Neverland, and make it through all the practices with your best effort, ye shall find a buried treasure at the end!
Are you willing to walk the plank?

Coach Leo’s Intermediate B Updates

July 21st, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Coach Leo’s Intermediate B Updates)

Regionals is quickly approaching in 2 weeks. At this point, some of you might be feeling tired before races and practices. As we finish up our Olympic Challenge week on Tuesday, remember to stay active, drink lots of water and sleep well as we enter our biggest and most exciting meet of the season.

We had a very busy weekend at WRASA. As a group, our racing drive is definitely  more aggressive than before. All of you want to win and I can see it in your strokes. The area that needs the most improvement is the consistency of your strokes. You must be able to do Back-to-Back Turns and Touch Turns consistently! You know how to do them correctly, but you must also do them ALL correctly not only in 50m races but also the 100m races. Mistakes such as taking an extra stroke into the wall during Back-to-Back Turns, or finishing your race with 1 hand in Fly or Breast are just not worth it. Don’t let your efforts go to waste because of a skill you already know how to do.

The key word this week is Confidence. Be sure in your strokes and execute your skills confidently along with your aggressive racing drive. Keep striving towards your goal times!

Our focus will be the following this week,
1) Back-to-Back Turns
2) Touch Turns
3) Dives
4) Individual work on your strokes

See you this week! – Coach Leo

• Regional events will be discussed with swimmers this week
• Red and White Meet on Wednesday (July 23)
