May 15th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Notifier - (Comments Off on Kigoos Updates for May 15th)
Pool Access

We will continue with the current schedule at Minoru and South Arm Pools until Friday, June 10th.  The exception will be Friday, June 3rd when we will use Watermania to get set for the Ice Breaker there on June 4th and 5th.

From Monday June 13th until Thursday, June 30th we will be using Minoru Pool for all our groups.  We will have exclusive access to Minoru Pool and we will have a new schedule that will look similar to what a June practice schedule at Steveston typically looks.

If all goes well, we will return to Steveston Pool on Monday, July 4th and have our regular summer access at the pool.

Swim Meet Sign-Up

Swim meet sign-up is now posted HERE for the first two weekend meets, the Kigoos Ice Breaker and the Boundary Bay Meet.  It is the same process as previous years.  Generally, you need to sign-up about 2 weeks before the meet.  Sign-up for JD Meets and other weekend meets will be posted shortly.  JD Swimmers should confirm with their coaches if they should register for weekend meets.  We hope ALL our swimmers will swim at the Ice Breaker Meet at Watermania.

Team Aquatic Discount

A reminder to all Kigoos families and especially for new families that The Swim & Fitness Shop at Watermania and other Team Aquatics locations gives swimmers 20% off of regular priced items. Please find your Shark Card attached. You can save it as a photo to your phone and use it upon purchase.

Kigoos Family Pizza Party

Hopefully everyone will be able to come to a special event on Sunday, May 29th from 3 – 6 pm.  We will supply pizza for everyone and have an open swim.  We will also do posters and cheers with all the swimmers, have  Kigoos clothing for sale, have a swap meet for all your swim gear and handout the new Kigoos practice and racing caps for the season.

Thanks everyone for all you assistance in making the best of the current pool situation.  Please continue to contact your child’s coach or Head Coach Emmy (headcoach@kigoos.com) with any swim questions and email Chris and Andrea at president@kigoos.com with any general questions about the club.

JD Red Update from Coach Tamara

May 15th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Red Update from Coach Tamara)
Hi JD Red swimmers and parents!
Welcome back all old and new swimmers to our 2016 summer season. My name is Tamara Yoshida, and I have the incredible privilege to coach this year’s JD Red group. This is my second year coaching with Kigoos and my 12th year swimming with the club. I have qualified for provincials since 2007, melded seven times and am a club record holder with my Div 5 girls relay team. Having the ability to swim with Kigoos and grow up with the Kigoos’s has been an incredible part of my life. I have created many memories and learned so much with the club. As a coach for the club, I want everyone to experience the wonders; I did as a young swimmer. I want to share my knowledge and help everyone become even stronger swimmers.
My swimming goals for our group this season are to become proficient in all strokes through progressions and lots of repetition. We will also be working on lots of turns and dives when we are out of South Arm.  Within the first month, we will work on getting back in the pool and getting our speed back up. We will also have lots of progressions to develop our stokes and getting ready for the race season to begin. I would like to encourage everyone to go to as many JD meets or regular meets as you can and attend the Kigoos social events.
My goal as a coach is to ensure every swimmer can swim in a fun, safe, and competitive environment. I want to help each and every swimmer to become the best they can be and achieve their personal goals.
If everyone can come to as many practices as possible, that would be awesome. Be ready to work hard, have fun and be positive. As we outside, don’t forget those runners, sunscreen, and water! I’m super happy to be coaching an amazing group of swimmers with tons of talent and potential; it’s going to be an incredible season!
If you have any question feel free to send me an email at tamara@kigoos.com or if you would like to talk to me in person after practice is always an excellent time to talk as well.
See you poolside!

JD Orange Update from Coach Hailey

May 15th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Orange Update from Coach Hailey)

Hi JD Orange swimmers and parents,

My name is Hailey Dong and I am thrilled to be coaching JD orange this year!  I have been swimming with Kigoos for six summers and this is my first summer as a coach.  I was a coach in training last summer and the last two Tsunami seasons.

This week I have been very impressed with everybody’s swimming and energy in practice.  So far we have been working on our streamlines and flutter kick using our super straight legs.  Next week we are going to start working towards adding arms to our freestyle and backstroke.  I also, want us all to work on our listening skills; this means having our eyes and ears out of the water while I am talking.  My goal for this summer is for everyone to improve their swimming abilities and have lots of fun!

We have been having great attendance, try to come to as many practices as possible (every time you come to five practices you get a prize!).  Also, for dry land, please remember to bring runners so we can warm up in the back field at South Arm.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at hailey@kigoos.com, I am looking forward to have a very fun summer as your coach!

-Coach Hailey

JD Blue Update from Coach Lucy

May 13th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Blue Update from Coach Lucy)

Hi JD Blue swimmers and parents,

My name is Lucy Bodden and I am super excited to be coaching JD Blue this summer! This summer will be my first year coaching and my seventh year swimming with Kigoos. I was volunteering as a CIT (Coach in Training) for two summer seasons, from which I learned so much and I am looking forward to having my own group and a lot of fun this summer!

This first week we practiced our basic freestyle and flutter kick technique as well as our perfect streamlines to get back into the habit of focusing on proper swimming and to remind ourselves of anything we may have forgotten! Next week we will be starting to work on our breaststroke kick and we will be focusing on doing three dolphin kicks of of every wall in our streamline while we practice freestyle.

This season, my goal for the group is to have a fun, positive experience swimming and for everyone to improve and feel confident in their swimming abilities! We have lots of JD meets this summer which are great opportunities for JD swimmers to experience racing so keep an eye out for those updates!

If you have any questions feel free to contact me at lucy@kigoos.com and I hope that everyone is looking forward to a great season!

JD White Update from Coach Teaghan

May 13th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD White Update from Coach Teaghan)
Hello JD White swimmers and parents,
My name is Teaghan Frid and I am so excited to be coaching JD White this season. I have been a swimmer with the Kigoos for 9 years and have now started coaching. I was a CIT (coach in training) for two seasons with the Kigoos and I coached the JD turquoise group during the most recent Tsunami season (2015-2016). I am very excited to have my own group this summer and I can already tell we are going to have so much fun this season.
I have been very impressed at practices so far, everyone is doing and awesome job and is trying very hard and that’s what I want to see. This week we’ve been working on very basic things, we’ve mainly been working on just getting back into the pool and starting to work on our skills again. Next week we will continue developing our basic skills like our flutter kick and streamline (which have been looking awesome so far) and getting more into our stroke development. I would like everyone to do their best to try and bring a pair of runners to every practice because we will be using the back field at South Arm for warm up. Keep up the good work everyone and I look forward to seeing you at practices!
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to send me an email at teaghan@kigoos.com

JD Turquoise Update from Coach Sophia

Hey, JD turquoise swimmers and parents. I’m Sophia Kostiuk and I am incredibly excited to be coaching JD this summer! I have been a swimmer with Kigoos for 8 years in fact I was a JD swimmer too!

I volunteered as a CIT (coach in training) for 2 seasons, and previously coached JD orange in the most recent Tsunami season. I am so excited to have the privilege to coach and have my own group this summer!

You have all impressed me this week.  There is very good attendance and an amazing amount of enthusiasm. We have been working on the basics including flutter kick and streamline kicking. I have been impressed by all of your effort when practicing kicking with strong legs.  As you keep swimming your endurance will grow even more.  Next week we will be working on continuing to develop these skills and moving into full stroke freestyle and backstroke.

Please remember to bring runners to every practice so that we can warm up in the back field of South Arm pool. Try to come to as many practices as possible because remember when you come to 5 practices you will get a prize. Keep up the good work!

Junior White Update from Coach Jacob

May 13th, 2016 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior White Update from Coach Jacob)

Hey Jr. Whites and parents!

I am Coach Jacob and I am really excited to be coaching the Jr. White group this summer. I have been coaching for 4 years both as a group coach and a volunteer. I have also been swimming for a total of 10 years. I have competed up to the provincial level where I won 2 gold medals this past summer. Kigoos is the highlight of my summer every year and I know it will be the same for all the Jr. Whites.

Although we will be running around from pool to pool this sumer because of some problems with Steveston Pool, Jr. Whites are going to work extra hard in our practices to make up for it. I understand that with school and the new pools in mix getting to all the practices is difficult. Just remember that the more practices we come to means the more we can improve.

I will be sending out a goal sheet for the swimmers to fill out this comming week. I hope to get these back soon so that we can start working on our individual goals in practice.

I am really excited to be coaching this group and I know we will all have a great summer filled with fast swimming and lots of fun!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me by email: jacob@kigoos.com
