Intermediate and Senior Red Update from Coach Emmy

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Intermediate and Senior Red Update from Coach Emmy)

Welcome Back Kigoos!

I am very excited to be back for my third season with the Kigoos and second year as head coach! I am a certified NCCP level one coach and am looking forward to sharing my knowledge, passion and love of all things swimming with the Kigoos for my seventh season of coaching. As a swimmer, I swam in both summer and winter clubs, but have never missed a season of BCSSA since joining in 1999! My greatest personal success in swimming came from the 100 meter breaststroke where I achieved a national time standard.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with both intermediate red and senior red groups this summer! It’s been a great first two weeks and I have enjoyed getting to know everyone in and out of the water. The month of May will be focused on technique and we will concentrate on one stroke each week. Hopefully, by the end of the month the intermediate and senior red swimmers will not only see improvement in their technique, but also understand the mechanics of swimming and the importance of swimming with good technique. The first week we focused on freestyle with an emphasis on breathing, body position and a high elbow catch. Last week we moved on to backstroke and focused on the importance of roll, kicking with relaxed ankles, and a bent elbow pull. Next week we will focus on breaststroke and concentrate on narrow kick, timing, and body position.

My coaching philosophy is process over outcome. I strongly believe in quality over quantity, which is why my senior and intermediate swimmers have been working on repetitions, progressions, and drills. I believe all swimmers thrive when they develop a positive relationship with their coach and group members and have fun. Through my coaching, I strive to connect with each swimmer and motivate them to achieve their best through the delivery of technical feedback and encouragement.

I hope to see all Kigoos work towards representing my club goals, which are:

  1. A strong technical base
  2. A positive community
  3. A love for the sport

If I have not had a chance to meet you yet, feel free to introduce yourself when you see me at the pool.

Looking forward to a great season!

Hey JD Turquoise!
My name is Charlie and I am super hopeful for a fun and exciting summer with all you guys! This summer will be my 7th season swimming for the Richmond Kigoos and my first year coaching! I spent the past winter assistant coaching for tsunami and now am very excited to have my own group.
It has only been 2 weeks and I am already thrilled with how far you guys have come with your freestyle and backstroke. The arm portion for both strokes have greatly improved and the rest is not far behind. We will continue to be working on the form and technique both strokes hold and will be introducing breaststroke and hopefully get a start on some dives and turns for those who may be interested in the upcoming meets.
Attendance has been pretty good so far to start this season but I’d love to see more of your faces at the pool. I’m hoping to see everyone at least 4-5 times a week or as many as you possibly can!
Don’t forget to wear proper running shoes for our dryland before practice!
I’m hoping to have a great first year coaching you guys and think it will be a lot of fun!

Intermediate White Update from Coach Alexis

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Intermediate White Update from Coach Alexis)
Hello Intermediate White swimmers and parents!
My name is Alexis and I am super excited to be coaching Intermediate White this summer! I have been swimming with Kigoos for the past 12 years and this is my 5th year coaching. Being a part of the Kigoos family has been such a memorable experience for me so my goal for the Intermediate White group is to have a meaningful and fun season while becoming confident and comfortable in all our strokes.
These first two weeks went by super quickly and I’m very happy with all the improvements we have made with our technique already. We are not worried about our speed for now, we are just trying to get the little things down pat and always make sure we are following all the rules of the strokes. A few things to remember for every practice:
– wear runners because we usually warm up in the field
– always do a proper turn, streamline, and fast breakout !!!!

Please bring in your goal sheets ASAP and remember to think of a favourite song to add to the Intermediate White Playlist! I am super impressed with everyone’s hard work these first two weeks and I know that the rest of the summer is going to be just as awesome as long as we all keep attending as many practices as we can.
I’m so excited to be working with you this season and I will see you on the pool deck!

JD White Update from Coach Sophia

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD White Update from Coach Sophia)

Hi JD White swimmers and parents,

My name is Sophia Kostiuk and I am SO excited to be coaching JD white this summer season!

I have been lucky enough to be a part of Kigoos for 9 years. This is my second season coaching and I am very pleased to be working with such an enthusiastic and motivated group of swimmers.

The first and second weeks have been going great. Within the first week we reviewed all the basics of freestyle including flutter kick, pull and proper body positioning. During the second week, we worked on backstroke. I was very impressed with JD White’s backstroke skills. Everyone has straight legs and can keep their tummy up for two lengths. For the next two weeks, we will focus on breaststroke, as this is a challenging stroke. I’m amazed at everyone’s enthusiasm at every practice.  Something everyone can work on is having their eyes and ears above the water to be able to hear the next set.

My overall goal for this season is to have every member of JD White not only being able to swim all four strokes, but to be able to swim them strongly with proper technique.  For me this means things like turns, touches and stroke execution as these are all things that will prevent you from getting DQ’ed at meets. So far we have had amazing attendance and I want all swimmers to keep this up and come to 4-5 practices every week.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at sophia@kigoos.com, or come talk to me before or after practice. I’m Looking forward to working with everyone and an exciting and fun filled season.

JD Red Update from Coach Taylor

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Red Update from Coach Taylor)

Hi JD red parents and swimmers,

My name is Taylor Reilly, and I’m really happy to be coaching with Kigoos and looking forward to an awesome summer in the pool! I swam competitively for 12 years, 5 with Kigoos and 7 with various winter clubs. I’ve raced at meets such as Western Canadian Championships and Age Group Nationals, as well as in the states as a member of team BC. This is my first summer coaching, and I couldn’t be more excited!

So far, I’ve seen some great work in the pool. The swimmers have strong flutter kick, and their freestyle technique has improved. We will continue to work on keeping this flutter kick consistent while breathing. The past week we shifted our focus towards learning or refining butterfly and backstroke technique. This involved lots of fly kick, flutter kick on our back, and drills. This focus will continue into next week, as we have lots to learn. 😊 I’ve seen positive attitudes and great attendance so far, and hope these continue through the rest of the season!

My main goal this year is that everyone has fun and enjoys swimming. My older brother Luke began his swimming career as a Kigoo JD, and has since gone on to become a ten time Canadian national champion. He has also represented Canada at Junior Worlds, Pan American games, and Commonwealth games, which reminds me of the potential that each swimmer in my group has.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at taylor@kigoos.com if you have any questions or would like to say hi!

JD Blue Update from Coach Lucy

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Blue Update from Coach Lucy)

Hi JD Blue swimmers and parents,

My name is Lucy Bodden and I am really excited for a fun season coaching JD Blue this summer! This is my second year coaching and my eighth year swimming with Kigoos. The past two weeks we have been practicing our basic freestyle and flutter kick technique as well as working on our shoulder roll while swimming backstroke. Next week we will be starting to work on our breaststroke kick and continuing to practice freestyle and backstroke.

This season, a couple of goals I have for the group is to have a really fun, positive experience swimming with Kigoos and to be able to swim most if not all of the strokes! I’m also hoping to see everyone out at meets this summer. We have lots of JD meets which are great opportunities for JD swimmers to experience racing and are really good introductions to get the kids feeling confident while competing. I would like to see everyone attending 4 practices a week if possible!

Another quick reminder to all JD swimmers is to please bring runners to every practice as we will usually be doing our warmup in the back field! J

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at lucy@kigoos.com

JD Orange Update from Coach Hailey

May 15th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Orange Update from Coach Hailey)

Hey JD Orange swimmers and parents,

My name is Hailey Dong and I am super excited to be coaching JD orange this season!  This is my seventh summer swimming with Kigoos and my second summer as a coach. I also coached in Tsunami last year and was a coach in training for a few years before that.

These past few weeks I have been very impressed with everybody’s swimming and enthusiasm in practice.  We have been working on the basics of freestyle and backstroke. Next week we are going to work on more technique and also starts and turns.  One thing to work on next week is making sure we are listening when I am explaining what to do. My main goal for this summer is for everyone to feel very confident swimming freestyle and backstroke, learn the basics of breaststroke and butterfly and of course have lots of fun!

So far, the attendance has looked very good, try to come to as many practices as possible (at least 4 per week would be the best). For dry land, please remember to bring runners so we can warm up and play games in the back field.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at hailey@kigoos.com, I am looking forward to having a very fun summer as your coach!

JD Yellow Update from Coach Erkia

May 7th, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Yellow Update from Coach Erkia)

Hey JD Yellow swimmer and parents,

My name is Erika Watson and I am very excited to be coaching JD yellow this summer! I have been swimming with Kigoos for the past 10 years and have been volunteering as a CIT (coach in training) for the past 2 years. This is my first season coaching, and I am thrilled to have my own group.

This first week all of the swimmers have impressed me with their swimming and energy in practice. We have been working very hard on our flutter kick with a kickboard using super straight legs. This upcoming week we will start doing flutter kick without a board, putting our arms in a streamline. One thing we need to work on for next week is our listening skills; this means having our heads out of the water when I am talking. My goal for this summer is that everyone has a fun and positive experience swimming with Kigoos.

We’ve had great attendance this past week, and I want all the swimmers to come to as many practices as possible. My hope is that everyone comes to at least 4 practices a week, but the more you come to the faster you can improve your skills!

If you have any questions feel free to email me at erika@kigoos.com

Looking forward to a fun filled season!

Coach Erika
