JD Blue Update from Coach Vincent

May 20th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Blue Update from Coach Vincent)

Hey JD Blues!

Hope everyone is having an amazing May long weekend! We have a few events coming up—the Mock Meet and the Icebreaker Meet. I would highly encourage parents to sign your swimmers up for both events so that both you and your kids can gain more experience with swim meets and learn how they are run.

This week, we started learning backstroke and dives. I am so impressed with how fast you guys are learning all of these new skills and techniques. However, there is still a lot to learn so make sure you come to as many practices as you can!

The Icebreaker Meet is only a few weeks away so I hope to see our attendance stay consistent. Attendance for afternoon practices have been awesome but I would really like to see more swimmers at morning practices. Keep up the good work and keep coming to practices ready to learn!

JD Red Update from Coach Lucy

May 20th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Red Update from Coach Lucy)

Hi JD Reds!

The past couple weeks we have worked on freestyle breathing, keeping our hips up in backstroke and whipkick. I am very impressed with the improvements I am seeing from everyone in the group! Next week we will continue to focus on backstroke and breaststroke and spend more time on dives and flip turns.

So far this season, JD red attendance has been really consistent, with almost our entire group coming to each practice so keep up the good work! I would like to encourage everyone to sign up for the Mock Meet that is coming up this Saturday as it is a great way to introduce swim meets, especially to newer swimmers.

We are less than two weeks away from Icebreaker so I am hoping to continue to see the great attendance we’ve been having over the next couple of weeks! Keep up the energy and positive attitude!

See you at the pool,

Coach Lucy

JD Turquoise Update from Coach Nikol

JD Turquoise

Hi parents and swimmers. I hope your long weekend is going great. I would like to encourage all parents to sign their children up for the mock meet as well as the Icebreaker. For the mock meet my suggestion would be sign up for 25’s and then for the icebreaker you simply have to sign your child up and I will be choosing their events.
This week the children worked very hard and have solidified some starts and finishes on their backs and fronts. We have worked a lot on freestyle and backstroke and it is incredible to see that in three weeks the children are already able to swim full stroke.

We have worked hard and will keep on working hard and I look forward to seeing everyone on the pool deck.
If there are any questions feel free to email me or come see me at the pool.

Cheers,

Nikol Rybolov

Senior White Update from Coach Erika

May 19th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Senior White Update from Coach Erika)

Hey Senior Whites,

This past week we went over proper breast stroke technique, lunging forward with every stroke, finishing your whip kicks, and only pulling to your chest. We also worked on touch turns, and I have seen a big improvement from our first week back! This week we will be going over fly technique. Similar to every other stroke we will be doing lots of drills to reinforce proper technique.

Over the next 2 weeks we have some fun events coming up. This Saturday is the mock meet. I expect to see all senior whites in attendance. It’s a great way to practice racing, and get an idea of what a swim meet is like. The icebreaker is coming up in 2 weeks, and I am very happy to see that almost all of you have signed up! If you haven’t, I strongly encourage you to sign up as it’s the first meet of the season, as well as our home meet.

We still had very low attendance this week. I understand that many of you have other activities, but please make it to as many practices as possible.

See you at the pool,

Coach Erika

Intermediate White Update from Coach Hailey

May 19th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Intermediate White Update from Coach Hailey)

Hey Intermediate Whites,

You guys have done an awesome job so far, I am really impressed with everyone’s attitude in practice! Just remember that when I am talking, you are listening and are keeping your ears out of the water. Over the last two weeks we have been practicing backstroke and breaststroke and next week we will be starting butterfly.

I know everyone is really busy with school and other commitments but try to come to as many practices as possible because we are reviewing all of the strokes and swimming skills now which will be beneficial for the rest of the season and upcoming meets.

We are really enjoying doing activation in the backfield, so please make sure you bring runners and wear active clothes to practice.

The Mock Meet is coming up this Saturday and is a great place to practice races and prepare for our first swim meet, the Ice Breaker! This is our home meet and the first meet of the year and is always lots of fun so it would be really awesome for all of you to come out to swim and participate. If you haven’t already please make sure you sign up for both events before the deadlines.

If you have any questions about the Mock Meet, Ice Breaker or anything else don’t hesitate to email or come see me at the pool.

Senior Red Update from Coach Alexis

May 19th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Senior Red Update from Coach Alexis)

Hello Senior Reds!

This has been an awesome last week (for those of you who have shown up!) This past week we have started the foundations of butterfly and backstroke and building our freestyle endurance. If you weren’t here, watch these videos to see what we’ve been working on so you’re ready for the next practice you attend.

Touch Turns

Swim into the wall with full extension, touch without grabbing the gutter and pulling your arms in. Brings your knees in as fast as possible and fall straight back into the water, not turning your hips. Get your arms into streamline and push off on your back, turning with your dolphin kick from the underwater fly or underwater pull.

Flipturns

The main things we’ve been working on with flipturns is the chest push into the wall, not looking for the wall before turning, and using our last stroke to get our arms in the perfect position for the streamline after. We want to glide a little longer on our backs than Chloe Sutton does in the video, but the speed and arms are exactly what we want.

Butterfly Arms

We have been working on maintaining a streamlined body position through as much of the butterfly as possible by pushing our chest slightly down and our hips up. We have also been working on breathing as low as possible to keep this position, and have a strong catch at the top of our pull to not lose any water.

Backstroke

The main things we have been working on are our hip roll, catching below our shoulders, pushing our hips up, and maintaining a still head position (secret word: gyoza). By ensuring our kick is starting from a hip-dropped position, we are able to use the entirety of our kick with each stroke.

Next week, we will be moving onto breaststroke for the start of the week then moving back to freestyle for the second half and practicing some race tactics (speedplay, dives, etc). Turnout has been about what is expected from Seniors in these last few weeks, but try to come to as many practices as you can!

Remember to sign up for the Mock Meet or let me know by Thursday why you are unable to attend. Awesome focus and commitment this week everyone, I’m incredibly excited to see where this season takes us.

See you on Tuesday!

JD White Update from Coach Gabe

May 19th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD White Update from Coach Gabe)

Hey JD Whites,

Can’t believe another amazing week has gone by, this past week we have been working on our backstroke and finishing up or freestyle. Luckily we also managed to do some awesome work on our dives, don’t worry if you missed it we are gonna have many more dives practices.

I’m really happy with how much we have improved our behaviour, keep up the great work and enthusiastic attitude.

For this upcoming week, we are going to start breaststroke so make sure you come to as many practices as possible cause breaststroke can be a tricky stroke to learn.

Make sure that you have signed up for the mock meet this coming Saturday, it’s going to be a great way for new parents and swimmers to get a feel for how a swim meet works. Also, don’t forget to sign up for the Icebreaker swim meet as soon as possible because I’m going to be doing meet entries on Wednesday.

Cheers,

Gabriel Lee

Junior White Update from Coach Sophia

May 18th, 2019 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior White Update from Coach Sophia)

Hey Junior Whites,

This week we focused on backstroke. I am super impressed about everyone’s ability to learn and pick up new techniques! Next week we will be focusing on breaststroke.

I have made the choice to not do swimmer of the week this week. Listening and respect was a huge issue for our group this week and we have had multiple discussions regarding it. As a group when we can improve on this we will begin swimmer of the week.

We have two exciting events coming up! First being the mock meet. The mock meet is a great event that’s super fun and will prepare you for races at your first meet of the season! Speaking of swim meets the second event is Icebreaker! Icebreaker is the first and only home swim meet of the year. I encourage everyone to come and participate and show their Kigoos spirit at these two events.

Everyone’s attendance has been increasing which is great to see. With more people attending practices the lanes get super crowded. I encourage everyone to try to come to morning practices as we usually have only 2-5 swimmers. With less swimmers there is so much more time for individual corrections. If you need to leave early for school or another commitment that is okay with me!

See you at the pool!
