Hello Junior Bs…

Congratulations on a great season! You did it! We have come so far since the beginning of May and I am very proud of all of you. I had an enjoyable time coaching and getting to know each and every one of you, so I am very happy with how our summer went and I hope you are too! Lots of time was taken off in our races, and all of our strokes and technique has improved A LOT. We even managed to have a little fun too ;) Some of us were even starting to make finals in swim meets, and we also have two provincial qualifiers which is awesome! Thank you for the gifts I received as well. I will see your smiling faces at the final banquet held at the beginning of fall, so for now enjoy the rest of your summer, and thanks again for a blast of a season!

Coach Ava’s Message to Senior B’s and Tater Tots

August 5th, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Coach Ava’s Message to Senior B’s and Tater Tots)

Senior Bs,

I cannot believe that Regionals has come and gone! For many of you the swim season has come to an end, so I would like to congratulate all of you on an excellent summer! You were a wonderful group to coach. We had a lot of fun together and everyone’s swimming has improved tremendously, which to me is a goal well achieved.

To those of you not continuing on to provincials, I hope that the rest of your summer is spent relaxing. Remember to keep yourself active throughout the year, whether it be through Tsumani or by means of other sports!

To my Tater Tots,

Way to go guys! You were a fantastic group of up and coming swimmers. I cannot believe how much you all improved. Many of you could not put your head under water on day 1, and by our last lesson you were swimming like fish! I hope that you all keep swimming, and that many of you will be ready to go for JD, or more Tater Tots next summer!

A special thank you is due to Coach Elizabeth and Coach Roselyn who are brand-new to the coaching scene. These girls did a great job of helping the Tater Tots with their swimming!

I hope to see all of you- Senior Bs and Tater Tots at the End of Year Picnic on Wednesday August 6, at 6pm in the field behind the pool!

Weekend Wrap-Up from Coach Leo

August 4th, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Weekend Wrap-Up from Coach Leo)

Hi Intermediate B’s,

I hope you had a wonderful season with me this summer. Everyone has worked extremely hard since May and I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to coach you. I am very happy that all of you have achieved best times. Remember that the strongest opponent in swimming is always your own time, so you should be proud of your achievements. Again, it is my pleasure to coach you this season. I hope that you will always remember our 5 keywords because swimming fast requires your strokes to be Efficient, and you do so with a tight Streamline, kicking off the Walls as hard as you can, doing your Underwater dolphin kick and having a strong Breakout (S.W.U.B). Doing these once is not enough, you must beConsistent whenever you swim! Remember that the nature of your strokes must also be Powerful and with high Intensity! The most important keyword though is Confidence. No matter when or where you are swimming, I hope you will always swim with Confidence because through practice, you can always improve your technique and reach limitless goals.

I hope to see all of you again at the Awards Banquet in September/October!

Thank you Int B Swimmers and Parents,
Coach Leo

JD Golds,
Our summer swimming season is coming to an end.  We have had fantastic races these past few weeks and everyone’s hard work has shone through all our training.  Your technique has improved and you have all picked up new strokes.  You all put so much enthusiasm into our practices and I hope you feel encouraged to continue swimming.
Thursday is our Club Pasta Night so be sure to stick around after practice for spaghetti and a small gift I have prepared for each of you.
This season has been so much fun to coach!  I am so proud of you all and hope I will see you next season!

Coach Leo’s Final Blog of the Season

Regional Championships is here! At this point, think back to all that we’ve practiced this season since May until now. Reflect on what I’ve told you before and after your races. Visualize how your best race would look like. Put all your energy into your races and apply everything you’ve worked on this season. Rest well and stay hydrated.

The last Word of the Week is Intensity. Ensure high intensity at all times.  As you race this weekend, think about all the keywords since May:

  • Consistency
  • Efficiency
  • Power
  • Confidence
  • Intensity

Our focus this week will be on dives, turns, and individual work on our strokes. See you this week!

Final Announcement:
I will not be attending the Kigoos Year-End Picnic on August 6 as I have to attend a wedding outside Canada. I have prepared a small gift for everyone so please come to Club Pasta Night this Thursday (July 31, PM) to receive it. It is my pleasure to be your coach this season. Swimming is extremely fun and I hope that I’ve helped deepen your interest in this sport! As you continue to improve in your strokes, I hope that you will always swim with confidence and with joy as I do every time I enter the water for races or for leisure. Thank you for being such a great group and I hope you’ve enjoyed this swim season!  – Coach Leo

Junior B Scoops Party – Friday!

July 24th, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior B Scoops Party – Friday!)

Tomorrow (the 25th) is the day that you can get your scoops from our Hell Week!

After practice ends at 7pm, we will be having our much awaited scoop cash in time, which means you get to make your own ice cream sundae! I will be providing the bowls and spoons, but feel free to bring your own bowl and spoon if you wish. There will be vanilla and chocolate ice cream, some chocolate and caramel sauce, as well as some sprinkles and candies for toppings. I will be letting you know tomorrow how many scoops you have, and I can assure you that everyone will have more than enough. If you are unable to make that practice let me know, as I will still give you a tasty reward of some sort on a later day.

I’m looking forward to our practice and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Ahoy there, JD Golds!
You’re about to begin your journey to Neverland!  Everyone’s swimming has been outstanding over the past two weeks and your times from the Kigoos and Crescent Beach JD meets are the best they have ever been this season.
You have all been training hard and improving on our strokes, dives, and kicks, and this is the week where it will all be put to the test in the greatest challenge you have ever faced.
If you are speedy and courageous enough to brave A Week in Neverland, and make it through all the practices with your best effort, ye shall find a buried treasure at the end!
Are you willing to walk the plank?

Coach Leo’s Intermediate B Updates

July 21st, 2014 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Coach Leo’s Intermediate B Updates)

Regionals is quickly approaching in 2 weeks. At this point, some of you might be feeling tired before races and practices. As we finish up our Olympic Challenge week on Tuesday, remember to stay active, drink lots of water and sleep well as we enter our biggest and most exciting meet of the season.

We had a very busy weekend at WRASA. As a group, our racing drive is definitely  more aggressive than before. All of you want to win and I can see it in your strokes. The area that needs the most improvement is the consistency of your strokes. You must be able to do Back-to-Back Turns and Touch Turns consistently! You know how to do them correctly, but you must also do them ALL correctly not only in 50m races but also the 100m races. Mistakes such as taking an extra stroke into the wall during Back-to-Back Turns, or finishing your race with 1 hand in Fly or Breast are just not worth it. Don’t let your efforts go to waste because of a skill you already know how to do.

The key word this week is Confidence. Be sure in your strokes and execute your skills confidently along with your aggressive racing drive. Keep striving towards your goal times!

Our focus will be the following this week,
1) Back-to-Back Turns
2) Touch Turns
3) Dives
4) Individual work on your strokes

See you this week! – Coach Leo

• Regional events will be discussed with swimmers this week
• Red and White Meet on Wednesday (July 23)
