Hi JD white!
I’m super excited to be your coach for this summer season! I love seeing some new and some familiar faces in the group this year. For those of you who have had me before you’ll know I’m a competitive person and love seeing the success you guys have at the meets and at practices. More importantly I’m hopeful that together we can make this a fun season to remember!
Our focus for the summer will be freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke mainly, striving to compete at JD meets or even regular meets. If you guys are feeling adventurous we may even dip our toes into the realm of butterfly….
As a final note I’d love for you guys to try and make as many practices as possible but aim for 3-5 per week! See you guys at the pool!

Welcome to JD Red from Coach Lucy

Hi JD Reds!

My name is Lucy and this is my 3rd year coaching and my 9th year swimming with Kigoos. During our first week of the season we have been focusing on the basics of freestyle and backstroke, making sure we’re breathing to the side and not lifting our heads up to breath. We will be continuing to practice this in the next couple of weeks and working on breastroke as well as learning how to do flip turns.

This season, a couple of goals I have for my group is to have everyone swimming all of their races legally and to have a fun, positive experience with Kigoos. Towards the end of the season, we will be working towards having everyone racing 50m butterfly and 100 IM. Just a reminder to all the JD’s to bring runners to dry land as most days we’ll be warming up in the back field.

I’m looking forward to a great season!

Feel free to contact me with any questions  or concerns!

Welcome to Senior White from Coach Alexis

Hello Senior White swimmers and parents!
Welcome to the start of the 2018 swim season! We’ve already had an awesome first week and a decent turn out at each practice. As a group, we have discussed some season goals for both practices and competitions: to get fit both in and out of the pool, to understand all the rules to competitive swimming, and to try our hardest and aim for best times in competitions. This season will be hard work and require commitment from everyone to bring our best effort everytime we’re on the pool deck, but it will also be a lot of fun!!
Throughout the summer there will be a variety of club social events where I expect all of the Seniors to be good role models for the younger swimmers by attending. These events are lots of fun every year and will be even more fun for everyone if all ages participates!
Please remember to bring a water bottle, runners, active wear, and a positive attitude to every practice! We will be working hard during the dryland warmups and doing a lot of technical work in the pool to build a strong foundation for sprint work later on. Come prepared to do your best and email me at with any questions!
See you on the pool deck,
Coach Alexis

Welcome to Senior Red from Coach Michael

Hello Sr. Red!

I am very glad to be back coaching the Richmond Kigoos Swim Club, and look forward to building off of the successes from last season. For those who have not been acquainted with me, I just completed my second year at Carleton University in the faculty of Political Sciences. Moreover, I swam competitively for 11 years, with the Vancouver Vikings, Richmond Rapids, and the Canadian Dolphins Swim Club. Through the years I became a sprint focused swimmer, and had competitive success at a national level. That being said I will use the experiences I have gained and translate that into the pool.

The main goal as a coach I have for the season is helping the athletes get to their goals. I have a firm belief that Sr.Red will excel this season. However, as many of you know, it will not come easy. I further expect Sr.Red to have a proclivity for hard work. In light of this, all I want is 100% in and I’ll give 100% out! Whether that is getting a best time, competing at provincials, or finishing on the podium; I am here to help everyone get to their goals. In order to do so I encourage swimmers to communicate with me. Whether if it’s questions about swimming or if something comes up. Additionally, being in a Sr. group bears responsibility. I want us to show the leadership I know every group member has. Meaning showing up with a positive attitude, activating properly, encouraging group members and other club members when times get tough, and continue to impact the community in a positive fashion.

In the weeks to come we will be refreshing our technical focus in the order of Free, Back, Breast, and Fly. I want to see every Sr.Red swimmer bring proper equipment like  running shoes and water bottles to every practice as we are getting back in shape for the season. If you feel a little ‘rusty’ in the water that’s ok, trust the process, we have all summer to grow and learn!

One last thing, I urge the entire Kigoos community to cheer on the Raptors in the NBA playoff as they are Canada’s team! #WeTheNorth

Let’s have an awesome season!

Best Regards,

Michael Jakac-Sinclair

Welcome to the Summer from Head Coach Emmy

Welcome back Kigoos!

I am very excited to be back for my fourth season with the Kigoos and third year as head coach! I am a certified NCCP level one coach and am looking forward to sharing my knowledge, passion and love of all things swimming with the Kigoos. As a swimmer, I swam in both summer and winter clubs, but have never missed a season of BCSSA since joining in 1999! When I was growing up, I would look forward to May 1st all year for the magic of summer swimming to begin, and now I do the same thing as a coach!

I am very excited to be working with intermediate red again this year! My expectation for the intermediate red swimmers is that they will attend practice often, on time, and ready to improve. This means, that they will not only work hard, but also listen well, and think about each movement they make in the water. I emphasize eliminating “junk meters” and always swimming with a purpose. In the first few weeks of practices we are going to talk a lot about developing a good ‘feel for the water;’ and how to ‘swim smart.’ My hope is for the intermediate red swimmers is to not only see improvement in their technique, but also understand the mechanics of swimming and the importance good technique, all while having fun and enjoying the sport of swimming.

I believe all swimmers thrive when they develop a positive relationship with their coach and group members. Through my coaching, I strive to connect with each swimmer and motivate them to achieve their best, through the delivery of technical feedback and encouragement. I hope to foster a positive environment and hearten a love for the sport of swimming amongst the Kigoos!

I hope to see all Kigoos work towards representing my club goals, which are:

  1. A strong technical base
  2. A positive community
  3. A love for the sport

If you have any questions, or just want to say hi, come find my on deck before or after practice, or send me an email at

Looking forward to a great season!

Season Ending Blog Post from Coach Michael

Hello Kigoos and Senior Whites!
As we all head home from Kamloops we reflect on an outstanding season and achievements. To all the swimmers, you showed not just the coaching staff, but the club, what hard work, determination, and persistence results in. We have set goals and we’ve achieved them and went to places with our potential that we never thought we were capable of doing at the beginning of the season. I can honestly say that all of the coaches are immensely proud of every swimmer. However, there is more work to be done. These skills that you have developed  and new experiences you have learnt from over the summer should be transferable into the upcoming academic year; to not lose focus on your own personal goals, to never be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, to complete your journey to your fullest potential, and never being afraid to adapt your plan if your initial one doesn’t succeed. As I go back to Carleton, I too will keep with me lessons that I learnt this summer. I’ll remember each and every highlight of the Señor White group and everything we’ve accomplished individually and together. Such as getting my ankles crossed over at the beginning of the year, all the Raptor sprints and Canadian sprints, and the true understanding of 100% in and 100% out. And most importantly, to never forget to keep that little bit of savage in you. It is safe to say with a firm belief that the senior white members have developed to become great individual leaders. This was not luck. We said why not.  And we truly did shock the world.
Best wishes to everyone and have a fantastic fall and winter season!

Update from Head Coach Emmy

August 2nd, 2017 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Update from Head Coach Emmy)

Hi Kigoos!

This season has flown by and it’s hard to believe Regionals is already this weekend!

I would first like to acknowledge the Intermediate and Senior red swimmers for their hard work over the last two weeks! I am so proud of the training they put in and it was great to see everyone working hard, encouraging their teammates, and pushing themselves to new limits. Congratulations to the green team (senior) and the yellow team (intermediate) for winning the Amazing Race!

With regionals approaching this weekend, we are now in the taper phase of our training cycle. This means we are resting up for the weekend and our focus is on fine-tuning our races with special attention to starts, turns and finishes. Everyone is looking sharp in the pool and I am excited to see all of the work the swimmers have put in over the last fourteen weeks pay off! I am happy to hear many positive comments on the pool deck. I would like to advise everyone to trust their training and enter into the weekend with a confident mind set, as a strong mental attitude is necessary for fast swimming!

Some announcements…

  • We have 64 relays entered and very few alternates. If your swimmer is on a relay please ensure they are available. Relays with less than 8 teams go straight to finals. Please make sure to check the relay teams and check in with your coach before leaving the pool this weekend.
  • If you know you are not planning on attending provincials and think you may be a qualifier, please let me know ASAP.
  • Be safe this week! Rest up, eat well and sleep well!

I can’t wait to see the Kigoos swim fast and have fun this weekend!

Hi Intermediate Whites!
Regionals is 2 days away I hope you are all excited! You have all been working so hard and your technique has improved immensely over the past 3 months which is amazing. I’m super proud of everything you’ve all accomplished this summer. These next few days are all about the little things like dives, turns, underwaters, and breakouts. We will also be doing timed sprints like the ones on Monday afternoon. I hope everyone can make it to Pasta Night on thursday for our last practice before Regionals and have a great day off tonight!
See you on the pool deck,
Coach Alexis

Senior White Update from Coach Michael

This year, In Honour of Canada’s birthday, our theme is Canada 150.
This year we will be going through the various different parts of Canada, such as Sports, Geography, Land Marks, and other parts of our cool country. And learn something along the way EH.
This Hell Week will be hard, but this week will show yourselves how hard work pays off. Its important to take note that its important to focus on technique when times gets hard and also maintaining focus on the task at hand.
This will be fun, Oh Canada!
