Grouse Grind and Triathlon Sign-Up Information

July 14th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Notifier - (Comments Off on Grouse Grind and Triathlon Sign-Up Information)
Next week are two of the marquee social events of the Kigoos Summer.  Sign-up is now open for both of them:

Grouse Grind
The Grouse Grind will happen Tuesday, July 21 at 10 am at Grouse Mountain.

Swimmers are to meet at the foot of the Grouse Grind at 10 am sharp for a 10:15 am departure. The hike generally takes the swimmers as little as 40 minutes to as long as 1.5 hours to complete. Swimmers can sign out with their parent as soon as they cross the finish line.
First time Grouse Grinders, please note that this is a very difficult hike.  All Junior and JD participants must have a parent supervisor with them on the hike.   Please send your child up with a large bottle of water in a light backpack that is easy for them to carry without use of their hands. It is also advised to bring a granola bar or other snack that is light to carry for when you finish.
All swimmers must pre-register HERE and include a parent / guardian name and contact cell number.
We will have a sign-in at the base when we meet, and a sign-out at the top when you are finished. Everyone must sign-out with a coach before you go explore/eat or take the gondola ride down to meet your ride home.
Important: everyone must take the Gondola ride down the mountain – it is $10 to buy a ticket for the Gondola ride down.
Please respect the drop-off/pick-up guidelines. The coaches are not responsible for the transportation or the care of your children after they are done the hike.  Any questions or concerns regarding this request should be sent to Coach Ava at ava@kigoos.com.
Triathlon
The annual Kigoos Triathlon is next Thursday, July 23 starting at 5 am. This event is open for all swimmers in Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Swimmers should note that for most coaches, the Triathlon is a mandatory component of Hell Week. Should a JD swimmer want to participate in the Triathlon (there will be a separate JD triathlon later), they must seek permission from their coach before registering.
To participate in this event, all Kigoos need the following gear:
1. A solid pair of running shoes.
2. A bike with a helmet. The helmet rule goes for all swimmers from Junior B to Senior A without exception. No helmet, no ride- you can run the bike portion.
3. Their swimsuit, cap, and goggles.
The race begins at 5:30am sharp, swimmers should arrive between 5 and 5:15am in order to set up their bicycle and receive their race number.
To register please sign-up HERE.  We need close to 40 volunteers so please sign-up when you register your child(ren).
More details including a slightly modified starting place for the route and  breakfast information will follow-up in the next couple days.

Notifier Update – June 7th

June 7th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Notifier - (Comments Off on Notifier Update – June 7th)
1)  July / August Schedule
The July / August Practice Schedule is posted HERE.   In addition, here is some important information from Head Coach Ava:
Beginning June 29, all swimmers must only attend their designated group practices. In other words, swimmers will be unable to “make-up” practices times that do not work in their schedule by attending an alternative group’s practices. As school and other activities come to an end, we hope that all swimmers will be able to make 4-5 practices per week. With limited pool space in July and August, there is no room for shifting around due to scheduling conflicts.

Thank you for your understanding.

Notice for all Senior swimmers:

Practicing as a combined “Seniors” group has worked well for May and June, however as we anticipate more of you will be attending practice regularly beginning in July and going through to August, we have to split the seniors into Red and White groups. The seniors will still practice as a combined group three times per week.

We will be splitting the seniors into Red and White based on their demonstrated ability, times, and commitment to Kigoos. We hope that the split into Red and White will be a positive experience as it will give each of you a chance to have more individualized coaching that is better suited to your specific needs as a swimmer.

Senior Red and White group lists will be posted on Friday, June 26 and will come into effect for the July 29-August 7 practice schedule.
2)  Photo Day
Photo Day is this Thursday.  Starting tomorrow, swimmers can pick up the order forms from their coaches.  We also have them available at the office.  Darby Photos will be doing our photos this year.  The photos will be between 4 – 6 pm.  Look for a final photo schedule tomorrow.
3)  Meet Sign-Ups
Please continue to sign-up for upcoming meets.  We will be closing the Ladner Super 7 Meet tomorrow.  If you have changed your availability and submit a second entry, we will use your most recent entry as your current entry.
Our sign-up for JD Meets is quite light – we need all those wanting to attend the North Delta JD Meet to sign-up by tomorrow (we only have 18 signed-up for the first JD Meet).  PLEASE NOTE – while these meets are geared for new swimmers, newer Junior and Intermediate swimmers may want to attend.  The rule for these meets is swimmers must be in divisions 1-3 and only have B times.  Often, for example, older siblings of JD swimmers attend JD Meets if they meet the criteria.
4)  Tater- Tots
Information on this year’s Tater Tots Program has now been posted HERE.   This highly successful program, will continue with the newly expanded model we established last year – a longer program that goes for almost 2 months!  Registration turn-around is quick, by this Thursday with classes starting a week tomorrow.  Preference is given to current Kigoos and to alumni – please share with others who may be interested.  All questions to Ava at headcoach@kigoos.com.
5)  Photos
We are trying to continually update our social media sites and our websites with photos from various events.  Please send any photos topresident@kigoos.com.  We see lots of people taking photos, it would be great to share them!
Thanks again everyone for a great weekend!

Richmond Kigoos Tater Tots Swimming Program

June 7th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Notifier - (Comments Off on Richmond Kigoos Tater Tots Swimming Program)

What to expect:

This seven week intensive swim program is designed for young swimmers to learn and build on the fundamentals of swimming. While this program aims to help younger children be more comfortable in the water, and to establish the key fundamental skills in swimming that are necessary to improve quickly, this program is not meant as direct stepping stone into our Junior Development program and should not be treated as such.

Preference will be given to younger siblings of Kigoos families as well as Kigoos Alumni on a first come, first serve basis. All swimming will be done in the small teaching pool at Steveston Outdoor Pool.

Due to limited pool space we only have room for a total of 16 swimmers. Each session is 30 minutes long and your swimmer will be assigned either the first or second half hour of the stated times and will be notified once registration is complete. The cost of the program is $100 and includes a Kigoos t-shirt.

Schedule:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday from June 15th until August 5th (no sessions on Wednesday, July 1st, 8th, or 29th).  Each session will be 30 minutes.  The program runs from 5 – 6 pm and swimmers will be assigned to the first or second half hour.

Please note:

Swimmers are expected to be on deck and ready to swim at the posted time. They should have goggles, and a swim suit. Parents must be on deck for the duration of the practice to care for their child if needed.

The deadline for registration is Thursday, June 11th.

For more information or to register please contact Head Coach Ava by email at headcoach@kigoos.com  Participants will be notified which timeslot they are assigned to no later than the end of the day on June 12th.

Mock Meet This Saturday!

May 28th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Meets | Notifier - (Comments Off on Mock Meet This Saturday!)
The Mock Meet is this Saturday morning and we have more than 150 breakfasts ordered!  It will be a busy morning – and so great we will have such a huge turnout.
We would like all swimmers to sign-in at 6:45 AM.  After cheers the first race starts at 7:40 AM.
The Mock Meet isn’t just for the swimmers anymore!
All new parents are encouraged to attend and take part in the morning’s events. You can also earn partent participation hours!   Please meet on the bleachers at 7:30am (directly after the kids finish cheers). This is an excellent opportunity to get an inside look at what goes on during a swim meet, learn how and where to get your volunteer hours, and ask all those questions that you’ve been dying to ask. New Parent Coordinator Rosemary Nygard will walk you through it all.
You can expect to learn (among other things):
1. Food for meets – what to bring, what’s provided.
2. What else to bring to meets.
3. Our Icebreaker Meet, what to expect.
4. What to expect from other meets.
5. Checking in with coaches re: what meet days to attend, Junior Development meets, etc.
6. General Q&A and much more.
If you have already signed up to help Nancy with the waffle breakfast, don’t worry, we’ll make sure you get to her in time.
For our experienced parents – please check in with your kids at 6:45 AM for volunteer duties helping with the food and / or the running of the meet.

A lot of news and reminders today:

1)  The updated group lists are now posted HERE.  There have been some adjustments and all those involved have been contacted individually.
2)  Today is the last day to sign-up for IceBreaker on June 6-7.  We currently have about 135 swimmers signed-up but hopefully we will still have more.  We love to get a huge turnout for our home meet.  Here is the sign-up page.  You can also sign-up for the other June weekend meets.  If you have any questions on meet sign-up check with your coach of Coach Ava.
3)  Wednesday is the final day to order your breakfast for the Mock Meet on Saturday morning.  The breakfast was a huge hit last year so you don’t want to miss out!  HERE is all the information including ordering details.
4)  On the topic of the Mock Meet – thanks to all of you who have already volunteered to help.  You can volunteer to help on the same form as you order breakfast (if you are volunteering and not ordering breakfast just leave the other items blank).  We would like all volunteers at the pool by 6:45 AM.  Some volunteers will assist with breakfast and others with the running of the meet.  We are still looking for more help!
5)  The Mock Meet schedule is now posted HERE.  We will want everyone at the pool by 6:45 AM!
6)  Unclaimed Awards from 2014 – There are some unclaimed awards from the 2014 season. Please check the family file box and the box in the office. Coaches, if you could take a look in the box that is in the office and let your swimmers know if they have anything to pick up that would be much appreciated.  Any questions please contact Wendy Maclean at awards@kigoos.com
7)  We are beginning to plan for our participation in the Steveston Salmon Festival Parade.  This has been more popular each year!  We are currently looking for parents to be involved and assist our coordinator Megan Zeni.  If you are able to assist (a great way to get hours!) please email her at: volunteers@kigoos.com.  We are also looking for a 20 ft. box trailer or similar trailer to build our float.  Again, email Megan if you can help!
8)  Finally for today – do you have Food Safe?  We are looking for a couple parents with Food Safe that could help with volunteering at a couple of our events and at Regionals in August.  Email Zoe if you can help with this at:  vpexternal@kigoos.com.
