Junior White Hell Week Plan from Coaches Alexis and Liam

July 16th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior White Hell Week Plan from Coaches Alexis and Liam)
Starting Monday July 20th through Friday July 24th the Jr. Whites will be swimming their hardest week of the season, Hell Week! This week will be extra tough but we still expect 100% effort from everyone.
The theme for this week is “Shipwreck.” The swimmers were all on a boat which was ambushed by the evil pirates Long-John Liam and the Atrocious Alexis. The pirates have stolen their boat and abandoned the swimmers on a small island in the middle of the ocean. There are no rescue boats or land to be seen and the only way off the island is to swim all the way back to Richmond. From the island to Richmond is 6000 meters, can we make it back?
As an incentive to come to practices and work hard, the reward will be Scoops. The amount of Scoops a swimmer can get is based on the amount of practices they attend and effort exhibited at each practice. The criteria for to receive these ice cream scoops is as follows:
5 practices – 1 scoop
6 practices – 2 scoops + 1 topping
6 practices and attendance at the Triathlon OR Grouse Grind – 3 scoops + 2 toppings
6 practices, Triathlon, and Grouse Grind OR 100% effort at one – 3 scoops + 3 toppings
The Scoops party will be held the week following Hell Week. If your child has any allergies could you please email both Liam and I so we know exactly what to avoid buying.
All this information will be told to the swimmers in the next few practices and the Scoop criteria will be posted on the window outside the coaching office. Get ready for a tough, but fun, week!

Junior White Update from Coach Liam and Coach Alexis

July 9th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Junior White Update from Coach Liam and Coach Alexis)

Hey Junior Whites! We’ve had a couple weeks of great practices, as we can see with the tremendous improvements we’ve made individually. The Smokey sky didn’t stop us from impressing at North Shore, and Coach Alexis and I are really looking forward to seeing what we can all do at Hootenanny this weekend! A couple things we have to remember:

  1. TURNS TURNS TURNS!! At this point in the season we’ve covered turns excessively, so we should all know what is expected of us at each wall. Flip turns in freestyle races and in practice are not optional. Same goes for two hand touches in Breaststroke and Fly.
  2. We need to see everyone trying for at least 5 underwater dolphin kicks off the wall in our Fly, Back, and Free races. These need to be done in a tight streamline.
  3. Make sure we get our elbows up in Freestyle. Swinging our arms wide slows us down.

You’ve all done a great job so far, let’s keep it up!”

Hey Jr. Whites!

We can’t believe how fast this week went by. We covered a lot of ground throughout the week, mostly focusing on our turns in I.M. and our awesome underwater dolphin kicks off the walls. The attendance this week has been pretty good, but we want to encourage all swimmers to come to as many practices as they can.
For those of you who came to Boundary Bay, us coaches were impressed with the improvements from only a week! We all need to work on our streamlines off the walls and making our turns as fast as we can.
A few reminders, remember to bring runners every practice. We are doing warm-up in the back field almost every practice and without runners it is harder to play games. Also, be sure to check your emails because we have a lot of social events coming up including movie night on Thursday June 25th!
See you on the pool deck!

Junior White Update from Coaches Alexis and Liam

Jr White!

We’ve had a great week of practicing and getting ready for the Icebreaker. As returning swimmers know the Icebreaker is a lot of fun! We know that swim meets can be a confusing thing for new swimmers, so if you have any questions please email both liam@kigoos.com and alexis@kigoos.com. Emailing is the best way to reach us as we check it everyday.

We’ve done a lot of work on dives and turns, and we’re really looking forward to seeing it pay off this weekend!

Important reminder!!! Before we can go into the back field, we need everyone to start wearing runners and active clothing to activation. This is super important, and we really appreciate everyone who’s already been bringing runners to practice. Also, please bring a water bottle to practice, as the summer starts to heat up.

Great job this week!

Hey Jr. Whites!

This week has been about practicing a lot of our underwater push offs. We’ve been working on our dolphin kick on our front and backs, in our perfect streamlines. We’ve all been working super hard in every practice and it’s great to see so many swimmers in the mornings!
Not only have our push offs improved, our strokes have too! Lots of new drills have been introduced to help us with our technique in every stroke.
Another important reminder, bring runners and a water bottle to every practice. We need our runners for activation, especially when we start going into the back field. During these sunny days we need to stay hydrated so we can swim as fast as we can.
This Saturday is the mock meet so come prepared to swim fast and learn a lot of new cheers! If you have any questions or concerns, email both liam@kigoos.com and alexis@kigoos.com.
See you on the pool deck!

Junior Whites!

Alexis and I have really enjoyed the past week and getting to know you all a little bit better. We are really looking forward to this summer, especially with the improvements we’ve already seen!

This week we did a lot of work on our Breastroke, and introduced our Butterfly arms. Swimmers should continue to focus on flexing the feet during the Breastroke kick.

Last Saturday we had a little coaches and parents meeting. If you weren’t able to attend, one of the points we stressed is that we expect our swimmers to show up to activation wearing runners. There is a lot of movement during activation, and having all the swimmers wearing runners is a great way to make sure no one trips!

As always you can reach coach Alexis and I at Alexis@Kigoos.com and Liam@Kigoos.com.

Welcome Junior White – from Coaches Liam and Alexis

Hello Junior White swimmers and parents!

Our names are Liam and Alexis and we will be your coaches for the rest of the season. Alexis has worked with the Kigoos since last year as a Junior Development coach and has swam competitively for 9 years now. This is Liam’s first year with the Kigoos, but not his first year coaching.

He has worked as a coach with the Richmond Rapids swim team for the past two years. Throughout this season we hope to accomplish many things. Some goals for this season are to bring the swimmers endurance up throughout the year, improve on our strokes with drills and maintaining proper technique, and to have lots of fun with our Kigoo family. Some expectations we have are that swimmers will try their best to come to at least 4 practices a week, always listen to the coaches during the practice, and work hard every time they step on the pool deck.

We hope everyone is excited as we are for this swim season and we look forward to seeing you on the pool deck!
