JD Season Ending Post from Coach Julia

August 14th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Season Ending Post from Coach Julia)

Well Kigoos, that’s a wrap for the JD season! Thanks to everyone who made this summer the success that it was… parents, coaches, and CITs – we couldn’t have done it without your help, time, and effort!

The JD Coordinator position was new to the club this summer so I learned a lot as the season progressed, and really enjoyed doing something a little different this time around! It was a great experience which I’m thankful I was able to have, and it also gave me the opportunity to develop more of a connection with the JD parents, which I really appreciated.

All the JD swimmers did a great job and should be proud of themselves – there was lots of improvement especially near the end of the season, and many swimmers became way more confident in their own abilities, which was great to see! I hope many of you will continue on with swimming as it’s a great life skill and our Tsunami program is a helpful way to maintain and build upon the skills learned this summer.

Thanks again to those of you who came out to the picnic tonight, and also for the gift that I received last week. It was very thoughtful and I will for sure make use of it! As for now, enjoy the rest of your summer and good luck to those who are continuing on to Provincials!

See you next at the banquet in September!

JD Update from Coach Julia – Including Triathlon Results

August 2nd, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Update from Coach Julia – Including Triathlon Results)

Hello JDs, congratulations on completing an awesome Olympic challenge week! You guys swam through the tougher practices, rocked the triathlon, and earned bonus scoops with your Olympic teams based on challenges during the week… great job!! Our race day on Friday involved a little more shuffling around than anticipated, but in the end everyone had a blast and we ended the day off with a yummy bowl of ice cream to celebrate.  Thank you to all of those who helped out to make the week a success!

This upcoming Tuesday the 4th marks our final JD practice of the year, and it will be lead by everyone’s original coach to give swimmers the chance to be with their own coaches and groups once more before the season is done. It will also give swimmers the chance to pick up their “swim card” from their coach if they have not yet already done so. Thursday the 6th is Pasta Night, and JDs are more than welcome to attend that event as well. Best of luck to the JDs swimming at Regionals too!

It has been a great season and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it, it’s hard to believe it’s winding down already! I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday at 5:45pm – please try to come to practice as it will be our last one!

Here are the times for those of you who completed the triathlon – we were blown away by how speedy everyone was and the event ran very smoothly, thanks again to all the parents, coaches, and volunteers who helped out!

JD Olympics

July 26th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Olympics)

JD Olympics week: Monday July 27th – Friday July 31st

Hello JDs and JD families… Welcome to JD Olympics week! This week is going to be filled with fun challenges and team competitions, a triathlon, some racing and relays, and much more, all concluded with our season windup/Olympic celebration in the backfield on Friday the 31st during our afternoon practice!

Instead of practicing with regular groups, new groups have been made that include JD swimmers of all levels – these new groups will be everyone’s teammates for the week! Each team will be lead by a JD coach, and on Monday the 27th between 4:30-5pm the teams will have a chance to get to know their teammates, create their team poster and team name, and discuss some challenges they might like to try in the upcoming week.

Our main reward for the JD Olympics will be scoops. Scoops can be earned for various reasons – team spirit, effort, attendance, winning challenges, etc… On Friday afternoon during our season windup, scoops can be traded in for ice cream, sprinkles, smarties, chocolate sauce, or other various toppings we might have. Typically the number of scoops everyone earns during the week will be divided in order to make their scoops smaller, so for example someone may earn 25 scoops but we would divide by 5 to leave them with 5 scoops, which could be used for 2 scoops of ice cream, 1 squirt of chocolate sauce, 1 spoon of smarties, and 1 spoon of sprinkles. Please bring your own bowls and spoons, and don’t worry about not having enough scoops at the end of the week, the coaches will make sure that everyone gets enough even after dividing to make them less!

As this is the last full week of practices for the season, please try to come to as many practices as possible – remember that attendance also counts towards scoops for your Olympic team!

Monday (4:30-6pm): Meet your Olympic teammates, choose your team name and make your poster, and begin Olympic training!

  • Please arrive at 4:30 as we plan on spending approximately the first 30 minutes making team posters and getting to know new teammates

Tuesday (5:45-7pm): Olympic training continues!

  • Practice time is per usual, please remember to please bring running shoes for the first 15 minutes of activation

Wednesday: Red & White Meet (club wide event)

Thursday (5:45-7pm): Training complete… Olympic challenge day begins!

  • Could include games during activation, swim races, relays, games, lung busters, kick competitions, penny dives, tiger sprints, activities of swimmers’ choice, and of course lots of cheering!

Friday (6:45-8am): JD Triathlon

• Please arrive no later than 6:50am as we will be organizing swimmers and setting up bikes in the back field, start time is planned for 7:05am

• JDs will be running and biking the loop behind the pool, and then swimming in the pool (distances TBA)

• We will be done by 8am as per usual practice schedule

Friday (time TBA, but will be around or during same time as practice): Season wind up in the backfield and celebration of the completion of JD Olympics

  • Families welcome!
  • Scoops will be rewarded (please bring your own bowl and spoon)

• Kigoos end of the season JD report cards will also be handed out

• Feel free to bring any snacks or dinner for yourself, and there might even be some more tasty food to share!

JD Update from Coach Julia

Hello JD families!

Here’s a big congratulations to those of you who attended this year’s first JD meet in

North Delta! The swims were awesome overall, and we saw so many of you looking

WAY more confident in the water than compared to the beginning of the season, which

was awesome! I’m thinking we will most likely get the chance to swim relays at the JD

meet next Wednesday, so don’t worry – relays will be coming and your coaches will be

practicing some relay takeovers this week to get you ready. We kicked off the JD meet

season on a great note, and I am really looking forward to the next ones.

Also, thank you so much to all the parents who drove the coaches to the meet, it was

much appreciated and made a huge difference. If it weren’t for you us coaches would

have had a lot more trouble getting there, so you truly saved the day!

Keep up the great work and see you on deck!

JD Update from Coach Julia

Hello JD swimmers!

Great job to those of you who swam at the Icebreaker, we’re all proud of you and can’t wait to see even more swimmers at the upcoming North Delta JD meet and other weekend meets. May was an awesome month, we saw so much progress and improvements coming from so many of you, and we are all eager to see what June will bring! The overall attendance seems to be getting stronger too, which is fantastic as every day the JD coaches are building upon skills learned the previous day, so consistent attendance is very beneficial to ensure each swimmers progress. That being said, please try to keep coming to as many practices as possible – and please keep bringing those running shoes as now most of our activation is done in the back field.

And just a reminder, Kigoos photo day is this Thursday the 11th! A schedule will be sent out shortly, but we hope to see as many of you as possible to get a packed photo with lots of swimmers!

As always, parents, if you have any questions or would like to chat, I will be on deck before, during, and after practice and will be happy to discuss whatever it may be. Thanks to everyone who has made the beginning of the season such a great one, and I’m looking forward to the coming weeks!

See everyone on deck!

JD Updates from Julia

May 25th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Updates from Julia)

Hello all JD groups… It’s been an awesome first couple weeks of the season, and it’s only going to get better! I am so impressed with the progress and technique improvements that everyone has been making, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you better, whether you are a swimmer or a parent.

The past two weeks I have been observing our practices and assisting certain groups when necessary, and I have also made some switches within the groups. Those who have been moved to a different group will have received an e-mail, and today (Monday), the new groups will be in effect. Since our JD program is constantly working on new skills and progressing quickly, it is likely that more changes to the groups might occur in the future.

A couple things to keep in mind:

• The Mock Meet is coming up! This Saturday the 30th is our annual Kigoos Mock Meet held at Steveston Pool. I would highly suggest you try to attend as you will gain a better understanding of how a swim meet runs, and it is also a great opportunity to make connections with other parents. Your swimmer will able to swim in a couple events, which is a great idea if you are new to the club as sometimes competing for the first time can be a little nerve-wracking. There is also a yummy breakfast, which I know I am looking forward to. I hope to see you there!

• Please bring running shoes to the 15 minutes of dryland before we get in the water. Since the weather is getting nicer out we would love to be able to do activation and some games in the backfield, but we can only do this if everyone has proper footwear. Thank you!

• Also, please consider wearing sunscreen! We saw some nasty sun burns last year, and hopefully can prevent our swimmers from suffering the uncomfortable feeling of a burn by coming prepared to practice with (waterproof) sunscreen on.

  • Keep up the great work! Parents and swimmers alike, you are doing awesome! I have really enjoyed being able to chat with a number of you, and I’m having a blast working with your swimmers. They are such an energetic bunch, and it’s great seeing how eager they are to swim. As always, if you have any questions or would just like to say hi, please feel free to e-mail me or find me on deck before or after practice.

Thanks a bunch and here’s to another great week!

JD Turquoise Update – May 22nd from Coach Tamara

May 22nd, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on JD Turquoise Update – May 22nd from Coach Tamara)
Hey JD Turquoise swimmers and parents!
Hope everyone had a great long weekend. Last week, we had very good attendance and I would like to keep our numbers high. We have already improved so much so it’s very important that swimmers attend as many practices as possible because every practice is building on the day before which may lead to lacking in some skill development. We are currently repeating drills and breath control so later on we will be able to swim full stroke more easily.
I would also like to remind and encourage for all new and old swimmers  to come out to the Mock meet next Saturday morning to experience what a swim meet is like and get a delicious breakfast after (don’t forget to order it).
Some reminders:
1. When swimmers are in the water, and a coach is talking you need to have your head up, hands-on the wall, and ears wide open. Also, we do not leave the wall until a coach says go.
2. If everyone could show up on time with runners and be ready to go.
3. Waterproof Sunscreen is highly recommended as we are in the bright sun.
4. Water is also recommended for all athletes while engaged in activities.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to talk to Julia or I before or after practice, not during

JD White Update from Coach Peter

Hello JD White swimmers and parents, the first week of group practice just went by so fast.I hope that you have been enjoying it so far. In the past week, my swimmers and I got to know each other better from games and the “get-to-know-me” sheet. All my swimmers improved on breath-controlling, streamline body position and kicking technique.  I am extremely proud of having such a group of talented and responsible swimmers. Let’s keep up our good effort! I hope to see some of you more often at the pool!

Welcome to JD Blue – from Coach Jacob

May 15th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Welcome to JD Blue – from Coach Jacob)

Hello JD Blues and JD parents,

Welcome to Kigoo Summer 2015, I am Jacob (Jake) Lee and I will be coaching the JD Blue group for this summer. I have been a part of Kigoos since 2007 and this year I have been given the chance to coach my own group. I am very excited and know this season is going to be so much fun just from these first couple practices. Some of my accomplishments from last year would be the winning of 5 gold medals at last year’s regional competition, and then competing at the Provincial Championships. I have been a volunteer with the Kigoos Tater Tot program and a CIT/Assistant Coach for many years.

A few rules that I have for the season for my swimmers are:

-Listening when I am talking

-Working as hard as we can

-Have fun

These are three easy rules that if we all listen to and follow, I know we will all have a fun and fast swimming filled season. Welcome to JD Blue!

Welcome to JD Red – from Coach Ian

May 12th, 2015 | Posted by kigooswm in Coaches Corner - (Comments Off on Welcome to JD Red – from Coach Ian)

Hello JD Red swimmers and parents!

My name is Ian Sifton and I am super excited to be coaching you guys for the summer!  To the returning swimmers, welcome back.  And to our new faces, welcome to the family!  This is my ninth year swimming with Kigoos and my 3rd year as a JD coach for the club.  I’ve had so many fantastic experiences over the years that range from having a great time with my friends to making new best times for butterfly, my favourite stroke!

My goal for the season is to make sure that you guys have a great time in the water and experiencing everything the club has to offer, while learning and improving on our swimming technique, speed, and endurance.

A few things that I’d like swimmers and parents to keep in mind are:

  • Please show up on time for warm-up (with a pair of running shoes in the event that we use the back field).
  • No fooling around (talking, splashing, etc.) when the coach is speaking.  This will help ensure we get through the explanation of the set quickly and be able to swim as much as possible.
  • Every time we push off a wall, our feet to be explosive and our hands need to shoot up into a rocketship!

Also, I would recommend swimmers bring a bottle of water.

We are going to be working a lot on our kicking endurance for the next two weeks, focussing on having small and fast kicks continuously moving through the water.  We’re also going to be going over our technique for our freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke to make they are super good.  For freestyle, focussing on keeping our kick going and our ear glued to our arm when we turn to breath.  For backstroke, kicking with our feet at the surface, pushing our tummies up and our chin back.

I can’t wait to get started!  See you guys on the pool deck!

Coach Ian
